Cody Burke | In the briefing room: Skype Connect

In early 2009, Skype launched the beta of Skype for SIP, its enterprise-focused offering that connects Skype to IP-PBX or Unified Communications (UC) systems. Is this the party to whom I am speaking? 18 months later, Skype Connect (née Skype for SIP) moved out of beta after a long gestation period, and we sat down with David Gurlé, general manager and vice president of the Skype for Business unit, to find out what had changed and what the company learnt during the beta period. Since this is Skype’s foray into enterprise sales, we weren’t surprised that this has been a learning experience.  Compared to 18 months ago, the company now has a better understanding of the [ more ]

I don’t have the strength To get up and take another shot And my best friend, my doctor Won’t even say what it is I’ve got - JUST LIKE TOM THUMB’S BLUES Gather round, children. Let me tell you about my Dad. He’s a wonderful, smart man. He taught me to play chess when I was 3. He is also an orthopaedic surgeon, which means he fixes broken bones and things. He comes from a long line of doctors, which I broke when I turned out to be a computer geek. Bryan | Ruby on Rails 3.0 is available

I'm not much of a programmer but I can appreciate the value of a good programming language when I see it. While I know Python and dabble with PHP, I've always appreciated Ruby and Ruby on Rails. There is something about the Ruby development scene that perks my interest in this programming language. Ruby on Rails 3.0 was just released this week. The development of Rails 3.0 has been two years in the making. David August writes: Rails 3.0 has been underway for a good two years, so it’s with immense pleasure that we can declare it’s finally here. We’ve brought the work of more than 1,600 contributors together to make everything better, faster, cleaner, and more beautiful. Some of the [ more ]

Ted Schadler | Lloyd’s Of London Takes Facebook To The Board

Peter Hambling, CIO of Lloyd's of London, the venerable insurer, has made Facebook a priority for customer communications that required board approval. But more on that later. First, some background . . . It's the nature of things. Some people look for ways to do things better -- and that includes your employees. Some of your employees are questing for a better way to get things done. If there's a better way out there, they'll find it. That's a good thing because the thing they're trying to do better is their job. Serve your customers. Solve your business problems. Improve your operations. It's always been true: Incremental innovation and process improvements have [ more ]

Peter Sejersen | LEGO: Web analytics is a business process

At LEGO they have taken web analytics a step further than most organisations by aligning it with the business objectives. This was the message I received, when talking to Gbemi Petersen, Manager of the Process & Online Intelligence team at LEGO in Billund in Denmark. Her team has worked actively on spreading the insights they collect to the entire organisation. The ambition is to work smarter and to allow the business units to make more informed decisions. Where most organisations find limited use of their numbers e.g. to encourage editors or to justify the costs of their work to managers, LEGO wants to make web analytics a key part of business development. To accomplish this, Gbemi and [ more ]
