Posted in ECM, Virtusa, media convergence, multi-channel publishing, multimedia, seo, social media on May 5th, 2010 by Virtusa – Comments Off

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.Virtusa Corporation (NASDAQ: VRTU), a global IT services company that offers a broad spectrum of business consulting and outsourcing services, today introduced its new enterprise content management (ECM) offering, the Media Convergence Solution Accelerator.  Modeled after Virtusa’s success implementing interactive Web platforms for the world’s leading media brands, the new service combines best practices consulting with proven technology components to ensure a consistent, branded user experience that optimizes revenue generation opportunities.

As content channels proliferate, consumers become increasingly migratory yet expect a unified and interactive engagement experience with companies.  Media organizations often struggle to align their brand across channels, both from a content perspective and at the technical level.  Misalignment in a converged world hurts the customer experience, and can diminish advertising revenue and increase support costs.

“As difficult as it is to manage content and technologies across disparate customer portals, it’s an opportunity for IT to directly impact the customer experience, branding and revenue generation – and these are precisely the kind of business results that Virtusa focuses on,” said Behzad Ilchi, Vice President for Virtusa’s Media and Entertainment segment. “Our Media Convergence Solution Accelerator is a truly proven approach that packages the best practices we’ve developed with some of the biggest media companies and gives customers more than 20 practical tools to replicate that success.”

WordPress.tv: SEO Analysis Video

Posted in CMSReport, search engine optimization, seo, video, wordpress on April 6th, 2010 by Bryan – Comments Off

I usually stay clear of search engine optimization (SEO) discussions, but I think this video is worth your time. In the video, Corey Eulas teaches SEO tips, tricks, and best practices found to increase traffic from search engines. This talk includes examples with a look “under the hood” of a few actual sites owned by members of the audience. You will “discover how to enhance user experience and usability while making your site more search engine friendly”.

It doesn’t hurt to take Corey Eulas’ advice and likely his tips will improve your chances for being ranked higher in the index pages of the search engines. However, I’m a firm believer that the number one tip for good SEO of your website is writing good content. Sure, you can tweak the code here and there and write the buzz words search engines may be looking for in order to help improve your site’s listing in the search index. In the end though it’s the quality of your content that will eventually win people over to your site.

LiveServer Setup Best Practice – How To Tame The OpenText Delivery Server

About the Author

This article is based on the blog post here of Danny Baggs. Danny has a strong developer based background and is working for Open Text.

Overview

The way the LiveServer Delivery Server is set up for a development environment usually is as a standalone application without having a front controlling web server. Although this is working for development purposes it doesn’t work within a live environment with several thousand users firing off HTTP requests every hour or minute or even second.
This post discusses the best practice of deploying the Open Text Delivery Server in an optimal way alongside a front controlling web server. This article provides a high-level overview of what to set up and how the necessary components work together. Depending on feedback I may post further posts on the details of each step.

After reading this article you will know

  • How to set up your LiveServer environment properly to ensure it is scalable, reliable and offers high performance
  • Which tools you can use to create dynamic functionality
  • How you can tweak your LiveServer to gain some SEO enhancements

How does Delivery Server work and what should you not do

The Open Text Delivery Server is a dynamic web server component that has strengths in coarse grained personalization and dynamic behaviour as well as system integration. All you need to know is where to get your hands on and what to do and what you better should not do.
The Open Text Delivery Server is housed within a Servlet Container. A Servlet Container is not the ideal location from which to serve static content. It handles requests in a way that limits the amount of concurrent requests. This can lead to severe performance issues.
There are ways to mitigate this but it needs quite a lot of Java experience and is still not recommended. Unless you wish to maintain a level of access control over the static content let’s put it simply like this:
Don’t run the Deliver Server as a standalone web server.

Next: What do you need to get Delivery Server running?

Plugin: Transfer Filenames

Posted in Asides, CMS, Plugins / Extensions, RedDot, RedDot plugins, filenames, plugin, seo on December 11th, 2009 by Frederic Hemberger – Comments Off

Although the CMS already includes a function to transfer the filenames of a language variant to all languages, this plugin – quite similar to the “Transfer RedDot Descriptions” plugin released yesterday – takes you a step further: All filenames are exported to an XML file which then can be translated to any other language before importing them back into the CMS.

It’s not only a matter of “nicer looking” filenames, but it’s also a serious issue in a project’s SEO strategy: You can translate important keywords in your filename for better search engine rankings for each of your language variants.

Google PageRank

Posted in Marketing, cmsreport.com, google, pagerank, rank, search engine, seo on October 16th, 2009 by Bryan – Comments Off

CMS Wire’s Barb Mosher reported about a forum posting by a Google Employee explaining why PageRank has been dropped from the Google Webmaster Tools. Barb writes:

Do you constantly watch the Google toolbar in your browser to see if your Google PageRank has changed? Do you worry constantly about why your rank is less than that of a competitor? Well, there may not be any reason to worry any longer.

Google has dropped PageRank data from Webmaster Tools.

Google has for some time discussed that PageRank is a very small factor among many factors that they look at for placing a particular indexed page on a search results page. Dropping PageRank from the Webmaster Tools appears to be just one more step in moving PageRank away from everyone’s attention.

We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it. :-)

I have observed that indeed PageRank doesn’t matter for placement on Google’s search pages. I’ve seen CMSReport.com’s front page ranked from as low as “3″ to as high as “7″ over the years. Although the page rank has varied over time, the placement of my web pages on the search pages have stayed about the same. Relevancy of the page to the search terms being used seems to have a much greater impact on how well your site ranks with the search engine. Additional details on why Google doesn’t see PageRank as a good measurement for a site can be found on one of their Webmaster FAQ.
